Buying online saves time, from groceries to electronics. Unfortunately, fake shops and dishonest sellers also use social media and websites to cheat buyers. A few simple checks protect your money.
Before you buy
- Check the seller’s history. Look at how long the page or website has existed, real customer reviews and comments.
- Compare prices. A price far lower than everywhere else is a warning sign.
- Look for a physical address and phone number. Call the number to confirm it works.
- Read the return and refund policy.
Paying safely
- Cash on delivery is the safest option when buying from a new seller.
- When paying online, use the website’s official payment gateway, not a personal mobile wallet number sent by message.
- Never share your card PIN, OTP or mobile banking PIN with any seller or delivery person.
- Be careful of sellers who ask for a full advance payment for expensive items.
Watch out for these scams
- Fake pages copying a famous brand’s name and logo.
- “Only 2 left” pressure tactics.
- Fake delivery calls asking you to pay an extra fee or share an OTP.
- Wrong product delivered and then the seller blocks you.
When the parcel arrives
- If possible, check the product in front of the delivery person before paying.
- Record a short video while opening expensive items, as proof.
If you are cheated
Keep screenshots of the page, chats and payment details. Report the page to the platform and contact your bank or mobile financial service quickly. You can also file a complaint with the relevant consumer protection authority.
Shopping safely online starts with a secure connection at home. Always use your own Wi-Fi, not public Wi-Fi, when paying.
