How to Change Your Wi-Fi Name and Password (Step by Step)

Your Wi-Fi password is the front door to your home network. If you have shared it with many guests, or you think a neighbour knows it, it is time to change it. The process takes about five minutes.

Step 1: Connect to the router

Connect your phone or laptop to your Wi-Fi, or plug in with a cable.

Step 2: Open the router settings page

Open a browser and type the router’s address in the address bar. The most common addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1. The exact address and the login details are usually printed on a sticker under the router.

Step 3: Log in

Enter the admin username and password from the sticker. If they have been changed and you do not know them, contact your ISP before resetting anything, because a reset can remove your internet settings.

Step 4: Find the wireless settings

Look for a menu called Wireless, Wi-Fi or WLAN. If your router has two bands, you will see settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately.

Step 5: Change the name and password

  • Network name (SSID): choose something that does not reveal your name, flat number or address.
  • Security: select WPA2-PSK or WPA3 if available. Avoid WEP or “open”.
  • Password: use at least 12 characters, mixing words and numbers. A short sentence like “MangoRain2026Kitchen” is strong and easy to remember.

Step 6: Save and reconnect

Click Save or Apply. Your devices will disconnect. Reconnect each one using the new password.

Also change the admin password

While you are in the settings, change the router’s admin password too. Otherwise anyone connected to your Wi-Fi could log in and change your settings.
